1936 "Charlie Chan at the Opera" at BYU film archive series Oct. 11

Warner Oland, as the super sleuth Charlie Chan, and Boris “Frankenstein Monster” Karloff will star in “Charlie Chan at the Opera” in a one-time showing on Friday, Oct. 11, at 7 p.m. in the auditorium of Brigham Young University’s Harold B. Lee Library.

Doors open at 6 p.m. Admission is free, but seating is limited. Children ages 8 and over are welcome. No food or drink is permitted in the auditorium.

In this 1936 thriller, detective Charlie Chan is in pursuit of an escaped mental patient accused of a murder in an opera house. “The conclusion,” wrote the Motion Picture Herald, “is a nerve-jangling thriller.”

James D’Arc, curator of the BYU Motion Picture Archive, will provide behind-the-scenes insights to “Charlie Chan at the Opera,” which is part of the L. Tom Perry Special Collection’s permanent motion picture library.

The presentation of “Charlie Chan at the Opera” is part of the ongoing BYU Motion Picture Archive Film Series throughout the year, now in its 15th season, and co-sponsored by the friends of the Harold B. Lee Library and Dennis and Linda Gibson.
