1934 "Cleopatra" with Claudette Colbert at BYU screening Feb. 8

The Brigham Young University Motion Picture Archive Film Series, part of the L. Tom Perry Special Collections, will show the 1934 drama “Cleopatra” directed by Cecil B. DeMille Friday, Feb. 8, in the Harold B. Lee Library auditorium on level one.

This showing of “Cleopatra” is part of the ongoing BYU Motion Picture Motion Picture Archive Film Series, now in its 14th season. James D’Arc, curator of the Film Archive, will introduce “Cleopatra” as well as another episode of the serial “Dick Tracy’s G-Men,” starring Ralph Byrd.

Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the movie will be shown at 7 p.m. The movie runs for one hour and 40 minutes. Admission is free, but early arrival is encouraged as seating is limited.  No food or drink is permitted in the auditorium. BYU dress standards apply, and children ages 8 and older are welcome.

The epic saga of the Queen of the Nile stars Claudette Colbert in the title role, with Warren William as Julius Caesar and Henry Wilcoxon as Marc Antony. DeMille, the most successful filmmaker of them all, was by 1934 well known for historical epics having produced “The Ten Commandments”and “The King of Kings,”two of the biggest blockbusters of the 1920s. He was a founding partner in what became Paramount Pictures.

DeMille’s vast collection of scripts, production files, still photographs and production art was donated to BYU L. Tom Perry Special Collections in 1977, where it has been open for research to students and scholars.
