In his devotional address at BYU, Jeff Bednar, professor of Management, testified of the doctrine of Christ and the peace it has brought him. He reflected on experiences that challenged his faith and ability to endure.
When Bednar's son was diagnosed with a rare genetic disorder after facing serious health challenges at birth, he realized that unlike many of the trials he had previously experienced, this one would likely have no end in mortality.
As he turned to Heavenly Father in prayer, Bednar received the prompting, "Jeff, he is my son too." The reminder that Heavenly Father loved his son just as much as he did brought Bednar peace amid uncertain times.
Through this experience, Bednar shared that his understanding of the doctrine of Christ changed, particularly the principle of enduring to the end. Rather than viewing it as simply waiting for a trial to end, he came to understand it as becoming more like Jesus Christ through life's challenges.
Sharing scriptural accounts and teachings from Church leaders, Bednar explained that Christ does not always remove life's storms but walks with His children through them. He encouraged listeners to "keep rowing," come unto Christ and trust Him through every trial.
Bednar also shared the experiences of three loved ones who have faced enduring challenges: a couple grieving the loss of their infant daughter, a friend living with ALS, and his wife, whose faith has grown stronger through her battle with cancer.
"True disciples endure with Christ through every mortal storm — even those that may never cease in this life," Bednar said.
He concluded by testifying that through Jesus Christ, trials can become opportunities to grow closer to the Savior and become more like Him.
"Through Jesus Christ, because of Jesus Christ, and with Jesus Christ, we can endure through all the storms of mortality — even the ones with seemingly no end — patiently working toward the ultimate End: recognizing Him when He comes again because, through His grace, we have become like Him."
