Devotional: Answering the dual calls for academic excellence and discipleship

“Sometimes the pursuit of academic and professional excellence and the pursuit of discipleship are framed as being in tension with each other,” William Clayton said in his devotional address. “My experience is that these pursuits can actually reinforce each other in important ways when we keep our eye single to the glory of God.”

Clayton, a professor and associate dean at BYU's J. Reuben Clark Law School, spoke on striving for excellence in both spiritual and secular pursuits.

He reflected on the unique clarity that comes when experiencing something new for the first time, like arriving at BYU with fresh eyes, which allowed him to recognize the spiritual and academic opportunities that make the university extraordinary.

He emphasized that BYU’s distinct power comes from its double heritage of combining “intense academic excellence with deep spiritual discipleship.”

“BYU is uniquely positioned to change the world and strengthen the kingdom of God at a scale and in a manner that is truly extraordinary,” he expressed.

Clayton issued two challenges to students: first, to build an unshakeable foundation of personal faith through scripture study, prayer, temple attendance and covenant-keeping; and second, to aim high in their academic and professional aspirations.

“As you strive for excellence, He [Jesus Christ] can help you discern which opportunities align with His purposes for your life and provide the wisdom you need to move forward with confidence,” Clayton said. “He is the perfect mentor.”

Clayton shared his own experience of choosing an uncomfortable but growth-filled path by moving to New York City for a career rather than staying closer to home. This decision shaped both his professional and spiritual life, providing career advancement and sacred experiences in Church callings.

He testified that stepping outside his comfort zone refined his testimony and expanded his capacity to bless others.

“I know that if you will learn to hear Him [Jesus Christ] — in the scriptures, in the temple, in the words of the prophets and in personal revelation — He will speak to you. He has guided me in decisions big and small, and I know He will do the same for you,” Clayton concluded.
