Name: Steven Harper
BYU employee since: 2002
My job at BYU is... to teach the foundations of the Restoration.
I’m currently working on… publishing Wilford Woodruff’s autobiographies online, writing a short book for Latter-day Saints about the law of consecration and writing a longer book for scholars about Joseph Smith’s revelations.
My favorite part about teaching is… helping students navigate from what Marie and Bruce Hafen call "complexity to other side simplicity."
The best advice I’ve ever got about teaching is… from retired English professor Bruce Jorgensen: "Don’t worry about covering everything, help people discover something."
My favorite lecture to teach is… William McLellin’s love/hate relationship with revelation.
I became a BYU fan when… Clay Brown caught Jim McMahon’s Hail Mary and Danny Ainge dissected the Notre Dame defense.
My favorite spot on campus is… the Gail Miller and Larry H. Miller softball/baseball fields because they’re beautiful and peaceful places to spend a spring afternoon or evening watching the Cougars.
My most cherished memory at BYU is… dating Jenny Sebring.
On Saturday mornings you’ll find me… on the lake.
One item on my bucket list is… going on a Saint Lawrence River cruise.
If I could travel anywhere, I would go to... Winnipeg, Canada, because I served my mission there.
The biggest challenge I’ve faced was... encephalitis.
