Cougar Queries is a series profiling BYU employees by asking them questions about their work, interests and life.
BYU employee since... 2020. Although I also worked here as a student and then a staff employee from 1988 to 1993.
My job at BYU is... the university librarian, a title that doesn’t mean anything to most people. It means I’m the director of the BYU Library. It’s the best job and the most fun I’ve ever had — apart from playing in a ska band while I was a student here — and getting hired at BYU again has been a longtime dream come true.
I’m currently working on... a constantly and kaleidoscopically shifting array of tasks related to library administration. I’m also always working on music projects, writing projects and finding new ways to make my grandchildren laugh.
I’ve hiked Y Mountain... 1.5 times.
I chose to come to BYU... because it’s where I can be fully and completely myself — intellectually, professionally and spiritually — and hopefully support others in doing the same.
My most cherished memory at BYU... is getting hired as a student employee in the BYU Library, which led to both my marriage and my career. I have no idea what my life would be like if I hadn’t checked the Wilkinson Student Center job board that one last time before going to apply at Taco Bell.
On Saturday mornings you’ll find me... sleeping in after five days of getting up ridiculously early for my very long commute. Then going for a run with my wife.
My go-to comfort food... is virtually anything Mexican or Mexican-adjacent.
Three things that are always found in my refrigerator... are Diet Coke, Diet Coke and Diet Coke. (And lemons for the Diet Coke.)
You’ll never find me without... something to read and music to listen to while I read.
