BYU employee since… 2005
My job at BYU is… associate professor of Scandinavian Studies and interdisciplinary humanities, and associate dean of undergraduate education, director of general education.
I’m currently working on… developing a new general education program.
I’m currently reading… "The Bear River Massacre" (non-fiction) and "Heike’s Void" (fiction) by our very own prof. Steve Peck!
Good books and great film taught by outstanding teachers ...sparked my interest in my field.
Living in Sweden for several years as a child changed the way I view new and strange things because I learned to be curious.
The biggest challenge I’ve faced was... overcoming cancer. (Couldn’t have done it without a loving family, great friends, wonderful doctors and nurses, a bunch of miracles and more prayers than I could ever count.)
On Saturday mornings you’ll find me… in a canyon hiking or running.
My favorite part about teaching is… that moment when students suddenly connect what we are learning to larger truths that are important to them.
When I have 30 minutes of free time, you can find me… reading.
My advice to incoming freshmen is… be curious.
My advice to graduating seniors is… don’t stop being curious.
The best-kept BYU secret is... International Cinema.
I’ve hiked Y Mountain... too many times to count, but Rock Canyon is my go-to quick hike.
My most cherished memory at BYU is… meeting my wife. (Who happened to be the teacher! Don’t worry, we didn’t date till months after the semester was over. It was also the worst grade I got in college.)
You’ll never find me without… something to read and something to write with.
