Name: Ben Crookston
BYU employee since: 2011
My job at BYU is… associate dean of Life Sciences, which means I do whatever the dean of our college asks me to do — it also means I support our college’s efforts to improve curriculum, international experiences and graduate programs.
When I have 30 minutes of free time, you can find me… the best 10 minutes of each day is talking about highs and lows over dinner with my wife and four kids.
I’m currently working on… conducting maternal and child health-related research in resource-poor settings. I'm currently working on a project examining health resilience in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and another project exploring the response to COVID in Sierra Leone and Zimbabwe.
I'm currently reading… "The Moment of Lift" and "Factfullness."
I get most excited about my work when… I see students fall in love with global health.
A caring and thoughtful professor… sparked my interest in my field.
My advice to incoming freshmen is… take a deep breath and enjoy the ride.
I’ve hiked Y Mountain... two times.
I chose to come to BYU because... of my experience here as a student.
On Saturday mornings you’ll find me… on a mountain bike trail.
My go-to comfort food is… breakfast burritos.
My favorite quote is... Eric Liddell in "Chariots of Fire:" “I believe that God made me for a purpose. But He also made me fast, and when I bike (run), I feel His pleasure."
