Hafen’s appointment is effective August 1, 2020. He is currently the managing director of BYU Alumni and External Relations, where he has directed the university's Publications and Graphics, University Relations, Special Events and Ticketing, Licensing and Trademarks, Aspen Grove and Alumni divisions. Hafen has also chaired the university’s Community Relations Committee.

“In addition to Steve’s extensive management and administrative experience prior to coming to BYU, his time with Alumni and External relations has prepared him well to lead the administrative and financial efforts of the university,” Worthen said. “I have full confidence in his ability to take on the many critical responsibilities that will come with this assignment.”

In his two decades of service, Evans worked to economize the administrative operations of the university to allow for more faculty positions for teaching and learning.

“Brian has provided remarkable vision and leadership to the university,” said Worthen. “He has done an extraordinary job of navigating the complexities of employment, auxiliary services, finances, and physical facilities of BYU.  He has left his mark on campus both by his own personal efforts and by assembling a remarkable team that shares his passion for improving the university.”

Before joining Alumni and External Relations in 2018, Hafen served as a senior business executive across multiple industries, including President and CEO of Devcon Security Holdings. He has also been an investor, partner and board member of several start-up companies.

Hafen has taught as an adjunct professor in the BYU Marriott School of Business for more than 13 years. He earned a master’s degree in business administration and bachelor’s degrees in international studies and Japanese from BYU.
