Brigham Young University Academic Vice President Justin Collings has announced the appointment of Michael Barnes as associate academic vice president for faculty development effective immediately.
Barnes replaces Collings, who has been serving as the academic vice president since June.
“Mike Barnes is a dedicated teacher, a productive scholar, and totally committed to the mission and aims of Brigham Young University,” Collings said. “His service in this new role will be a great blessing to our faculty and, through them, our students.”
Barnes is a professor of public health and former associate dean of the College of Life Sciences at BYU.
He received his Ph.D. in community health from Southern Illinois University and a master’s and bachelor’s degree in community health from BYU.
Prior to joining the faculty at BYU, Barnes taught at New Mexico State University. His research monitors the impact of family health and emotional well-being on public health problems and policies. He also collaboratively applies computational health science algorithms to monitor population indicators of mental health.
During his career, Barnes has been awarded several honors, including BYU’s Wesley P. Lloyd Award, SOPHE’s Public Health Fellow Award and NMSU’s Donald C. Roush Excellence in Teaching Award.
