Acclaimed King's Singers to perform at BYU Oct. 28-29

The King’s Singers will be performing at Brigham Young University Wednesday and Thursday, Oct. 28 and 29, at 7:30 p.m. in the de Jong Concert Hall.

Tickets are available through the Fine Arts Ticket Office or by visiting byuarts.com. Tickets are $12 to $37. This event is also a part of the artsPASS and Performing Arts Series season ticket packages.

The King’s Singers will be onstage with the BYU Singers under the direction of Ronald Staheli on Wednesday. On Thursday they will be performing with BYU’s Philharmonic Orchestra, under the direction of Kory Katseanes, and the Concert Choir, under the direction of Rosalind Hall.

“We tailor each program to follow a theme,” said Paul Phoenix of The King’s Singers, “and on this visit we are delighted to be joined on consecutive evenings by the BYU Singers and the BYU Philharmonic and Concert Choir. We are going to be performing and interacting with both groups, joining forces to sing pieces by Eric Whitacre and Bob Chilcott on the first night and a wonderful arrangement by our dear friend Mack Wilberg on the second night.”

The King’s Singers, who won a 2009 Grammy Award, have been considered one of the highest-caliber a cappella groups since the group’s formation at King’s College, Cambridge, in 1968. Now comprised of countertenor David Hurley, countertenor Timothy Wayne-Wright, tenor Paul Phoenix, baritone Philip Lawson, baritone Christopher Gabbitas and bass Stephen Connolly, The King’s Singers continue to be one of the most sought-after and critically acclaimed vocal ensembles in the world.

“Performing in Utah is one of the great pleasures of the job,” Phoenix said. “We are surrounded by friends and well-wishers, breathtaking scenery and talented young musicians. What more could you ask for?”

The King’s Singers are touring across the globe this year and have performed at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts as well as the major halls of Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Cleveland, Dallas, Los Angeles, Philadelphia and San Francisco. The group also performed with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir in 2007 and in 2002 as part of the Winter Olympic Games Cultural Olympiad in Salt Lake City.

“Being regular visitors to the western United States, we have many, many friends at BYU, and we are extremely excited to be a part of the university community during our stay,” Phoenix said. “Not only do we get the chance to perform, but also teach and learn from those around us whilst we are there. We look forward to many more visits to Utah and are excited to visit BYU once again.”
