Writing, Illustrating for Young Readers Workshop at BYU June 8-12

Published authors and artists will teach aspiring writers and illustrators of all skill levels how to write, illustrate and publish books for children and young adults during the Tenth Annual Writing and Illustrating for Young Readers Workshop at Brigham Young University June 8-12.

The full registration fee for the five-day seminar is $460 and includes all workshops and breakout sessions. Registration for afternoons only (1:30 to 4:30 p.m.) is $120. Both registration packages include a ticket to the Thursday evening banquet. Two semester hours of teacher in-service credit are available to those attending the full workshop, and one semester hour is available to those attending afternoons only.

Registration is open to men and women 16 years of age and older. Infants or children cannot be accommodated in any sessions. For more information or to register, visit wifyr.byu.edu, or call the Division of Continuing Education at (801) 422-2568.

A number of talented authors, illustrators, editors and agents — including Sharlee Glenn, Dandi Mackall, Claudia Mills, Louise Plummer, Ann Cannon and Will Terry — will teach a variety of workshop sessions. Best-selling fantasy author Tracy Hickman will present the keynote address at the banquet Thursday evening.

The workshop will focus on how to write, illustrate and publish in the children’s and young adults’ fiction and non-fiction markets.

Morning sessions will be spent in writing groups of 13-15 people directed by award-winning authors. Group members will share their writing with the group and receive feedback and instruction. The afternoon sessions will consist largely of presentations by the various published authors and artists.

Students should bring two picture-book manuscripts for the picture-book workshops; the first two chapters of a chapter book or novel for the early chapter book or novel workshops; and a portfolio for the illustration workshop.

The conference is co-sponsored by the Department of English and the Division of Continuing Education. For more information or to register, visit wifyr.byu.edu, or call the Division of Continuing Education at (801) 422-2568.
