Writing and Illustrating for Young Readers Workshop at BYU June 16-20

Published authors and artists will teach aspiring writers and illustrators of all skill levels how to write, illustrate and publish books for children and young adults during the Ninth Annual Writing and Illustrating for Young Readers Workshop at Brigham Young University June 16-20.

The full registration fee for the five-day seminar is $460 and includes all workshops and breakout sessions. Registration for afternoons only (1:30 to 4:30 p.m.) is $120. Both registration packages include a ticket to the Thursday evening banquet.

Two semester hours of teacher in-service credit are available to those attending the full workshop, and one semester hour is available to those attending afternoons only.

Registration is open to men and women 16 years of age and older, and infants or children cannot be accommodated in any sessions. For more information or to register, visit wifyr.byu.edu or call the Division of Continuing Education at (801) 422-2568.

A number of talented authors, illustrators, editors and agents will teach a variety of workshop sessions. This year’s workshop instructors include:

• Stephen Fraser, an agent with The Jennifer DeChiara Literary Agency, who recently worked as executive editor for HarperCollins Children’s Books, where he edited books by authors such as Mary Engelbreit and Ann Rinaldi;

• Brandon Sanderson, two-time finalist for the Campbell Award for Best New Writer and author of the breakout novel “Elantris,” which was published in 10 languages;

• Will Terry, illustrator for 17 children’s books, including “Armadilly Chilly” by Helen Ketterman, which was chosen for the Texas 2x2 Reading List, the North Carolina Children’s Book Award and the Arizona Young Readers Choice Award;

• Rick Walton, author of more than 70 children’s books of all varieties, whose books have been featured on the IRA Children’s Choice list, Reading Rainbow and CBS’s This Morning; and

• Stacy Whitman, editor at the Wizards of the Coast imprint Mirrorstone, who edits fantasy for children and young adults, including the The New York Times bestseller “A Practical Guide to Monsters.”

Students should bring two picture-book manuscripts for the picture-book workshops; the first two chapters of a chapter book or novel for the early chapter book or novel workshops; and a portfolio for the illustration workshop. For more information on required materials for individual classes, visit wifyr.byu.edu.

The conference is co-sponsored by the Department of English and the Division of Continuing Education. For more information or to register, visit wifyr.byu.edu or call the Division of Continuing Education at (801) 422-2568.
