Wind Symphony, Symphonic Band plan joint concert Feb. 26

Brigham Young University’s Symphonic Band and Wind Symphony will join together to perform Friday, Feb. 26, at 7:30 p.m. in the de Jong Concert Hall.

Tickets are $11, $10 or $8 with student ID, and can be purchased at the Fine Arts Ticket Office, by calling (801) 422-7664 or by visiting byuarts.com.

Conducted by Kirt Saville, the Symphonic Band will begin the concert with the Overture to "Candide’” by Leonard Bernstein. The group will also perform "Nimrod" from the "Enigma Variations’”by Edward Elgar, “Strange Humors” by John Mackey and “Armenian Dances” by Alfred Reed.

The Wind Symphony, conducted by Donald Peterson, will present “Festival Variations” by Claude T. Smith, “Sasha Takes a Train” by Kim Portnoy and “Pansoric Rhapsody” by Chang su KOH.

The ensemble will also perform “Guisanderie” by Faustin and Maurice Jeanjean featuring guest soloist Jaren Hinckley and “O Magnum Mysterium” by Morten Lauridsen with guest conductor Ronald Staheli.

Green-thumb dynasty: BYU landscaping wins fifth national championship in six years

For the fifth time in six years, BYU students dug, pruned and planted their way to the National Collegiate Landscaping Competition title, the March Madness of college landscaping teams. BYU bested 50 other universities in the four-day event, outscoring the second-place finisher by more than 358 points and breaking the 5000-point total for the first time in the 48-year history of the tournament.
