Wind Symphony and Symphonic Band join for Nov. 3 performance

Brigham Young University's performing ensembles Wind Symphony and Symphonic Band join together to perform Wednesday, Nov. 3, at 7:30 p.m. in the de Jong Concert Hall.

Tickets are $9 and $3 off with student ID. For tickets, call the Fine Arts Ticket Office at (801)378-4322 or visit performances.byu.edu.

The Symphonic Band under the direction of Donald Peterson will begin the concert with pieces from D. Delle Cese, Tielman Susato, Morten Lauridsen and Ron Nelson. The Symphonic Band uses full concert band instrumentation with nearly 85 musicians.

The Wind Symphony, conducted by David Blackinton, will perform pieces from Arthur Sullivan, Frank Ticheli, Daniel Kallman, Henry Fillmore and Robert Russell Bennett.

The Wind Symphony has received national recognition and has performed in Taiwan, Thailand, New Zealand, Australia, Finland and Mainland China.

Origami-inspired space tech: BYU mechanical engineers create deployable systems for NASA and U.S. Air Force

BYU’s Compliant Mechanisms Research lab, inspired by the ancient art of origami, is building a foldable, compact design that could help launch satellite systems to space in a rocket. After five years of research, a team led by professors Larry Howell and Spencer Magleby has succeeded in creating foldable antenna systems than can deploy off space rockets and permanently open to enhance satellite systems.
