William Primrose Memorial Concert Feb. 28 to feature New Zealand artists

The annual William Primrose Memorial Concert will feature violist Donald Maurice and pianist Richard Mapp of the New Zealand School of Music Saturday, Feb. 28, at 7:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall.

Admission is free. They will be assisted in the performance by Claudine Bigelow, viola, a member of the BYU School of Music faculty and organizer of the annual event.

The program will feature the Allegro tempestuoso from Viola Sonata, 1994 by Anthony Ritchie, the Andantino from Viola Concertoby Alfred Hill, several selections from Béla Bartók’s 44 Duos for Two Violins arranged by William Primrose, the Lacrimosa and Lux Aeterna from the Holocaust Requiem by Boris Pigovat, and a tribute to the life and music of George Enescu (1881-1955), including his Sonata for Viola and Piano in the Romanian Character, transcribed by Donald Maurice.

The Primrose Memorial Concert is an annual event that honors the legendary violist and former BYU faculty member William Primrose (1903-1982). This program features violists from around the globe, who like Primrose, distinguish themselves on the instrument and promote its scholarship.

Donald Maurice is a professor at the New Zealand School of Music. He has presented at International Viola Congresses in London, Chicago, Austin, Linkoping, Guelph, Seattle, Kronberg, Reykjavik, Montreal, Adelaide and Tempe and was guest artist in 2006 at the Lionel Tertis International Viola competition and workshop on the Isle of Man.

Richard Mapp teaches classical piano and chamber music at the New Zealand School of Music. He studied at the Royal Academy of Music from 1975-79, and taught there from 1979-1982. While living in Britain and Italy, he performed regularly in the main London concert halls, and recorded for the BBC, and for radio in Germany, Sweden, Finland, and Canada. He has appeared as soloist with all the orchestras in New Zealand, and tours regularly for Chamber Music NZ.
