Honor Choir: Every Thursday, BYU's only non-auditioned choir will get together to make music, friends, develop singing skills and even perform at a few venues. The choir is open to anyone. Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead): The BYU’s Museum of Peoples and Cultures will be hosting a Dia de los Muertos celebration, a traditional holiday in Mexico, at the museum from 7 to 9 p.m. The museum is located at 700 N. 100 E. in Provo. Activities will include face painting, coloring your own mask, an exhibit scavenger hunt, sugar skull-making and free refreshments. This event is free for everyone. BYU Devotional: Elder Paul V. Johnson, a member of the Quorum of the Seventy of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, will address the BYU community at a devotional at 11:05 a.m. in the Marriott Center. “In the Music Industry, but Not of the Music Industry”: Ron Saltmarsh, a professor in the School of Music at BYU, will give advice on how BYU music graduates can pursue their chosen careers while still maintaining their moral compasses at noon in B192 Joseph F. Student Innovator of the Year Competition: The Ira A. Fulton College of Engineering and Technology at BYU will be hosting its third annual SIOY competition Nov. 7 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Brigham Square and Nov. 8 from 2 to 3 p.m. at the Wilkinson Student Center Varsity Theater. Sphinxes and Sweethearts Date Night: The BYU’s Museum of Peoples and Cultures invites couples to the for an Egyptian-themed date night at 7 p.m. The museum is located at 700 N. 100 E. in Provo. Couples will have the chance to win prizes through different activities, while learning about the Egyptian culture. After the activities, they will enjoy refreshments. Tickets are $10 per couple and will be available for purchase at the Wilkinson Student Center Information Desk beginning Monday, Nov. 5. BYU ROTC Presidential Review: Army and Air Force Cadets from BYU’s ROTC programs will conduct the annual Presidential Review and award ceremony presided by President Cecil O. Samuelson.  President Dieter F. Uchtdorf, second counselor in the First Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will be honored as this year’s recipient of the Leadership Excellence Award and will address the audience as part of the ceremonies. Christmas Booktalk: This year’s Annual BYU Christmas Booktalk will be from 4-5 p.m. at the Harold B. Lee Library auditorium on level one. Anita Charles, BYU Bookstore buyer of literature for children and young adults, will provide an uplifting presentation that will focus on beautiful and wonderful holiday books for children and young adults. The event is free and open to the campus community and the public. Those in attendance will gain a handle on the latest titles, hear short summaries of the works and, best of all, receive free copies of the newest books. The event is hosted by the BYU HBLL Farnsworth Juvenile Literature Library and the BYU Bookstore. 

BYU Goes Broadway: This is an auditioned event held by the Student Activities Board where students can perform one of their favorite Broadway songs individually or in a group. It will be held at the Varsity Theater at 7 p.m. More information is available at stab.byu.edu.

Monday and Friday, Nov. 26 and 30

Acoustics Show: BYU’s favorite acoustics show, “Sounds to Astound,” is really turning up the volume with shows Nov. 26 at 6 p.m. and Nov. 30 at 7 p.m. The shows focus on the science of sound, with more than enough decibels for all ages and personalities. The acoustic shows will be held in C-215 Eyring Science Center. The shows are free and attendees should arrive five to ten minutes early as a courtesy to the volunteer presenters.

Friday, Nov. 30

Culture-Me-Mine Date Night: Couples are invited to come to Culture-Me-Mine date night at 7 p.m. in the Museum of Peoples and Cultures  and experience a night of culture, crafts and fun. The museum is located at 700 N. 100 E. in Provo. They will have the opportunity to learn about the museum’s two current exhibitions through activities and games. Tickets for the event are $10 per couple and will be available for purchase at the Wilkinson Student Center Information Desk beginning Monday, Nov. 26. The Monte L. Bean Life Science Museum is closed for renovation and is not scheduled to open again until fall 2013.

Expanded Dinosaur Exhibit:The BYU Museum of Paleontology, formerly the Earth Science Museum, was recently expanded to display most of its collection. Now with the new 5,000 square-foot addition, the museum features a replica of a 9-foot long triceratops skull from Montana, dinosaur bones found last summer near Moab, a Cretaceous period nest, dinosaur skeletons of a Camptosaurus and Allosaurus, and a mural of the Utah-Colorado region during the Jurassic Period. Visitors can touch real fossils and view them being prepared in the active laboratory. The museum, located at 1683 N. Canyon Road in Provo, is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, with extended “Family Night” hours Monday from 6 to 9 p.m. Admission is free. For more information, call (801) 422-3680.

Planetarium Shows: The Royden G. Derrick Planetarium regularly offers Friday night shows hosted by the BYU Astronomical Society at 7 and 8 p.m. for $2 a person. The planetarium is located at N465 of the Eyring Science Center on campus, and tickets are available at the door beginning at 6:30 p.m. For more information and a complete schedule, visit planetarium.byu.edu.

New Anthropology Exhibit: The Museum of Peoples and Cultures recently opened the exhibit titled “Entwined: A Vibrant Heritage of the Modern Maya,” which teaches about textile creation, a tradition that has carried on through the generations. Stories from Around the World: The Museum of Peoples and Cultures is now featuring a story time for toddlers and preschoolers every Friday at 11 a.m. during the school year. The program is free with new stories and a new culture each week. The museum is located on 700 North 100 East in Provo. Each week, folktales will help children to explore elements – like music, clothing and families – that cultures throughout the globe share. Children will hear the stories as they sit surrounded by artifacts that are held in the museum’s galleries. For more information, call (801) 422-0020 or visit mpc.byu.edu.

Free Campus Tours: Complimentary tours of the BYU campus are available for students, staff, faculty, prospective students, alumni and visitors weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Gordon B. Free Exhibit Tours: BYU’s “Education in Zion” exhibit in the Joseph F. Smith Building now offers daily tours Monday through Friday at 1 p.m. in addition to regular hours: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays and extended hours on Monday and Wednesday until 9 p.m. Tours begin in the east-wing lobby on the main floor of the Joseph F. Smith Building. The gallery traces the history of education in LDS culture and showcases art from local artists and BYU students. Visitlib.byu.edu/sites/educationinzion for more information. Free Family History Classes: The Family History Library at the Harold B. Lee Library at BYU offers free family history classes the second and fourth Sunday of each month. The classes begin at 3 p.m., 4:30 p.m. and 6 p.m. The library’s family history resources and consultants are available from 10 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. on these Sundays. Free Study Help Workshops: The Career and Academic Success Center at BYU offers classes on test preparation, stress management and time management. BYU’s space ace: Minor planet named in honor of Jani Radebaugh

BYU planetary geology professor Jani Radebaugh’s contributions to planetary science have reached cosmic proportions as she recently received the prestigious honor of having a minor planet named her. The asteroid, previously known as “45690,” now bears the name “45690janiradebaugh” on official NASA/JPL websites.

BYU team helps create diagnostic tool that achieves accuracy of PCR tests with faster, simpler nanopore system

A new diagnostic tool developed by Brigham Young University and UC Santa Cruz researchers can test for SARS-CoV-2 and Zika virus with the same or better accuracy as high-precision PCR tests in a matter of hours.
