Tuesday, May 1

BYU Devotional: Tom Morris, geology professor at BYU, will be the campus devotional speaker in the de Jong Concert Hall at 11:05 a.m. The devotional will be broadcast live on the BYU Broadcasting channels and online at byub.org. Lecture and Networking event: The David M. Kennedy Center for International Studies will host an event lecture and networking event on building trade alliances between Utah and the Middle East and North Africa. Speakers include Arab senior commercial officers from Bahrain, Egypt, Morocco, Oman and Tunisia, as well as Curt Silvers, executive vice president of National U.S.-Arab Chamber of Commerce.  One-on-one meetings with the delegates will be available after the student lecture. Wednesday, May 2

Brigham’s Yard Sale: The Student Activities Board is hosting the annual “Brigham’s Yard Sale” from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Wilkinson Student Center Terrace. This is an event where students and faculty can sell some of their old unwanted items or even some of their craft projects. In order to participate in this event, individuals must purchase a booth from the Wilkinson Student Center Information Desk for $5.

Saturday, May 5

GRE Prep Course: The BYU Conferences and Workshops’ GRE Preparation Course will begin Saturday, May 5, and end Tuesday, June 5.  This course teaches strategies and offers practice on how to best prepare for the Graduate Record Examination. More information is available at ce.byu.edu/cw/testprep.

Senior Orchestra Workshop: BYU Conferences and Workshops is hosting the New Horizons Orchestra for senior adults who want to begin or take up again the study of a musical instrument. The orchestra is for adults ages 40 and older. Friday, May 11

Salt Lake Evening with Friends: The BYU Alumni Association will host an event at the BYU Salt Lake Center with guest speakers Jerold and JoAnn Ottley. Admission is free but seating is limited. Register online before Thursday, May 10, at alumni.byu.edu/2012slewf.

Tuesday, May 15

BYU Forum: Rulon Pope will deliver the 2012 Karl G. Maeser Distinguished Faculty Lecture, the university’s highest faculty honor, in the de Jong Concert Hall at 11:05 a.m. The forum will be broadcast live on the BYU Broadcasting channels and online at byub.org. Free Homerun Derby: The Student Activities Board will host a free wiffle ball derby at 5 p.m. at Brigham Square. Email studentactivitiesboard@byu.edu with name and BYU ID number to register for this event.

Saturday, May 26

BYU Recent Grad Baseball Tailgate: The BYU Alumni Association will host an event for BYU recent grads (graduates of 10 years or less), alumni, family and friends at 11:30 a.m. with a tailgate party before the final home BYU baseball game of the season. The event begins at the southeast corner of LaVell Edwards Stadium with a hotdog barbecue by J Dawgs. Register for only $5 online at alumni.byu.edu/tailgate. Price includes food ticket, tailgate activities and admittance to the game. For those who have an All-Sport card and children 5 and younger, the price is $4. The deadline to purchase tickets is May 26.

Free Acoustic Explosion Concert: The Student Activities Board will host an outdoor Acoustic Explosion concert featuring the talents of BYU students at 7 p.m. at Lee Lane (the lawn north of the Wilkinson Student Center). Submit demos to 3400 WSC or by email to studentactivitiesboard@byu.edu. In the event of rain, the activity will be held in the Wilkinson Student Center Varsity Theater.

Expanded Dinosaur Exhibit: The BYU Museum of Paleontology, formerly the Earth Science Museum, was recently expanded to display most of its collection. Now with the new 5,000 square-foot addition, the museum features a replica of a 9-foot-long triceratops skull from Montana, dinosaur bones found last summer near Moab, a Cretaceous nest, dinosaur skeletons of a Camptosaurus and an Allosaurus and a mural of the Utah-Colorado region in the Jurassic Period. Visitors can touch real fossils and view them being prepared in the active laboratory. The museum, located at 1683 N. Canyon Road in Provo, is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, with extended “Family Night” hours Monday from 6 to 9 p.m. Admission is free. For more information, call (801) 422-3680.

African Exhibit: The Monte L. Bean Life Science Museum invites the public to explore Africa in its newest exhibit, “Into Africa: Exploring Nature’s Interactions,” now on display. This exhibit is free and open to the public. Visitors will have the opportunity to identify animals using the new iPad and iPhone app that can be downloaded from the Apple App Store. iPads will be available to check out for the exhibit for $3. Free Children’s Discovery Reading: Every Wednesday at 11 a.m., children ages 10 and younger can enjoy story time at the Monte L. Bean Life Science Museum, where they will hear stories about animals and nature read by a professional storyteller. Live animals will also be presented. The event is free each week, and registration is not necessary. For more information about this and other museum events, contact the museum at (801) 422-5051 or visit mlbean.byu.edu. Please note that the Bean Museum will close July 1 for a year for remodeling.

New Anthropology Exhibit: The Museum of Peoples and Cultures recently opened the exhibit “Entwined: A Vibrant Heritage of the Modern Maya,” which teaches about an ancient skill that has carried on through the generations. Museum hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays. For more information, call (801) 422-0020 or visit mpc.byu.edu.

Stories from Around the World: The Museum of Peoples and Cultures is now featuring a story time for toddlers and preschoolers every Friday at 11 a.m. during the school year. The program is free with new stories and a new culture each week. The museum is located on 700 North 100 East in Provo. Each week, folktales will help children to explore elements – like music, clothing and families – that cultures throughout the globe share. Children will hear the stories as they sit surrounded by artifacts that are held in the museum’s galleries.  For more information, call (801) 422-0020 or visit mpc.byu.edu.

Free Campus Tours: Complimentary tours of the BYU campus are available for students, staff, faculty, prospective students, alumni and visitors weekdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Gordon B. Free Exhibit Tours: BYU’s “Education in Zion” exhibit in the Joseph F. Smith Building now offers daily tours Monday through Friday at 1 p.m. in addition to regular hours from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays, with extended hours on Monday and Wednesday evenings until 9 p.m. Tours begin in the east-wing lobby on the main floor of the Joseph F. Smith Building. The gallery traces the history of education in LDS culture and showcases art from local artists and BYU students. Visit lib.byu.edu/sites/educationinzion for more information. Free Family History Classes: The Family History Library at the Harold B. Lee Library at BYU offers free family history classes the second and fourth Sunday of each month. The classes begin at 3 p.m., 4:30 p.m. and 6 p.m. The library’s family history resources and consultants are available from 10 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. on these Sundays. Free Study Help Workshops: The Career and Academic Success Center at BYU offers classes on test preparation, stress management and time management. Students can attend classes to improve their academic, career and life skills. All workshops are 50 minutes long and are held in 2590 Wilkinson Student Center. BYU’s space ace: Minor planet named in honor of Jani Radebaugh

BYU planetary geology professor Jani Radebaugh’s contributions to planetary science have reached cosmic proportions as she recently received the prestigious honor of having a minor planet named her. The asteroid, previously known as “45690,” now bears the name “45690janiradebaugh” on official NASA/JPL websites.

BYU team helps create diagnostic tool that achieves accuracy of PCR tests with faster, simpler nanopore system

A new diagnostic tool developed by Brigham Young University and UC Santa Cruz researchers can test for SARS-CoV-2 and Zika virus with the same or better accuracy as high-precision PCR tests in a matter of hours.
