Devotional: Cory Leonard, assistant director at the David M. Kennedy Center for International Studies at Brigham Young University, will be the campus devotional speaker in the de Jong Concert Hall. Wednesday, May 4

Free Acoustic Explosion Concert: The Student Activities Board will host an outdoor Acoustic Explosion event at 7 p.m. at Brigham Square. Some of BYU’s best acoustic talent will perform at this free concert, with six performers performing three songs each. For more information, visit stab.byu.edu.

Senior Orchestra Workshop: BYU Conferences and Workshops is hosting the New Horizons Orchestra for senior adults who want to begin the study of a musical instrument. The orchestra is for adults ages 40 and older. Alumni Evening: The Brigham Young University Student Alumni Association will host the “Emeriti Salt Lake Evening with Friends” from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the BYU Salt Lake Center. The keynote speaker will be Heidi S. Swinton, author of the official biography of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints’ President Thomas S. Monson. Archeology Block Party: In honor of Utah Archaeology Week, the Museum of Peoples and Cultures will be hosting its annual Block Party from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the museum, 700 N. 100 E. in Provo. Archaeological demonstrations, hands-on activities and food will be available throughout the day. Activities will include corn grinding, cordage pottery, lace making, basketry, archaeology digging, flint knapping, petroglyph making and face painting. Complimentary museum tours will also be held and will include the museum’s new exhibition on Mayan textiles. This event is free and open to the public. Free Homerun Derby: The Student Activities Board will host a free wiffle ball derby at 5:30 p.m. at Brigham Square. A mini fence will be built and participants must hit as many homeruns over the fence as they can before reaching five outs. An out will be counted every time the batter swings but doesn't hit a homerun. For more information, visit stab.byu.edu.

LSAT Test Prep: The BYU Conferences and Workshops’ LSAT Preparation Course will begin Saturday, May 21, and end Saturday, Aug. 13. This course prepares pre-law students to take the Law School Admissions Test. The course is costs $795. Attendees can register online at testprep.byu.edu or by calling (801) 422-8925.

Ethics Teaching Conference: BYU Conferences and Workshops invites university and college professors to theTeaching Ethics at Universities” conference, showcasing the top ethics professors in the nation as they discuss the teaching of ethics, beginning at 3:30 p.m. in the N. Eldon Tanner Building. This event is co-sponsored by the Wheatley Institution, the Marriott School of Management and the Society for Business Ethics. Free Children’s Discovery Reading: Every Wednesday at 11 a.m., children ages 10 and younger can enjoy story time at the Monte L. Bean Life Science Museum, where they will hear stories about animals and nature read by a professional storyteller. Live animals will also be presented. Free Broadcast Sports Radio: Throughout the month, BYU Radio will be broadcasting live Cougar sports, including men’s baseball and women’s softball. Tune in to BYU Radio at byuradio.org.

FHE at the Museum of Peoples and Cultures: Student groups and families from the community are invited to the Museum of Peoples and Cultures, located at 700 N. 100 E. in Provo, for special guided tours on select Monday evenings. The cost is $5 per group. New Anthropology Exhibit: The Museum of Peoples and Cultures recently opened the exhibit “Entwined: A Vibrant Heritage of the Modern Maya,” which teaches about an ancient skill that has carried on through the generations. Museum hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays. For more information, call (801) 422-0020 or visit mpc.byu.edu.

Free Exhibit Tours: BYU’s “Education in Zion” exhibit in the Joseph F. Smith Building now offers daily tours Monday through Friday at 1 p.m. in addition to regular hours from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays, with extended hours on Monday and Wednesday evenings until 9 p.m. Tours begin in the east-wing lobby on the main floor of the Joseph F. Smith Building. The gallery traces the history of education in LDS culture and showcases art from local artists and BYU students. Visit lib.byu.edu/sites/educationinzion for more information. Expanded Dinosaur Exhibit: The BYU Museum of Paleontology, formerly the Earth Science Museum, was recently expanded to display most of its collection. Now with the new 5,000 square-foot addition, the museum features a replica of a 9-foot-long triceratops skull from Montana, dinosaur bones found last summer near Moab, a Cretaceous nest, dinosaur skeletons of a Camptosaurus and an Allosaurus and a mural of the Utah-Colorado region in the Jurassic Period. Visitors can touch real fossils and view them being prepared in the active laboratory. The museum, located at 1683 N. Canyon Road in Provo, is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, with extended “Family Night” hours Monday from 6 to 9 p.m. Admission is free. For more information, call (801) 422-3680. 

Free Study Help Workshops: The Career and Academic Success Center at BYU offers classes on test preparation, stress management and time management. Students can attend classes to improve their academic, career and life skills. All workshops are 50 minutes long and are held in 2590 Wilkinson Student Center. If you cannot attend at the scheduled times, there are one-on-one classes available. Call (801) 422-2689 or visit ccc.byu.edu/casc to schedule.

Free Family History Classes: The Family History Library at the Harold B. Lee Library at BYU offers free family history classes the second and fourth Sunday of each month. The classes begin at 3 p.m., 4:30 p.m. and 6 p.m. The library’s family history resources and consultants are available from 10 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. on these Sundays. BYU’s space ace: Minor planet named in honor of Jani Radebaugh

BYU planetary geology professor Jani Radebaugh’s contributions to planetary science have reached cosmic proportions as she recently received the prestigious honor of having a minor planet named her. The asteroid, previously known as “45690,” now bears the name “45690janiradebaugh” on official NASA/JPL websites.

BYU team helps create diagnostic tool that achieves accuracy of PCR tests with faster, simpler nanopore system
