Wednesday, Feb. 1

Dodge Billingsley, a documentary film producer and director with Combat Films & Research, will present "Afghanistan Heats Up: An Assessment" at a Kennedy Center Global Awareness Lecture at noon in 238 Herald R. Clark Building. Admission is free.

Thursday, Feb. 2

Valerie Hudson will lecture at a Women's Studies Colloquium on the Women’s Research Institute “Womenstats Project” at 11 a.m. in B040 Joseph F. Smith Building. Admission is free.

BYU physics and astronomy professor Dallin S. Durfee will discuss “Splitting and Recombining Atom Waves” at a House of Learning Lecture at 2 p.m. in the Harold B. Lee Library auditorium. Admission is free.

Friday, Feb. 3

Victor Narsimulu, a doctoral candidate in Educational Leadership and Foundations at BYU, will speak on “Understanding Pacific Island Education” at an International Field Studies Lecture at noon in 238 Herald R. Clark Building. Admission is free.

Sunday, Feb. 5

Elder W. Rolfe Kerr, a member of the First Quorum of the Seventy and Commissioner of Education for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, will speak at 6 p.m. in the Marriott Center for a Church Educational System Fireside. Tuesday, Feb. 7

The BYU Singers, Concert Choir, Men’s Chorus and Women’s Chorus will perform at 11:05 a.m. in the Marriott Center for a musical campus devotional. It will be broadcast on the KBYU networks. Rebroadcast information is available at www.byubroadcasting.org.

Phil Deloria, professor of history and director of the American culture program at the University of Michigan, will present “Reading Mount Rushmore” for the annual Annaley Naegle Redd Lecture at 7 p.m. in the Harold B. Lee Library auditorium. Admission is free.

His Excellency Hafiz Mir Jalal Pashayev, ambassador from Azerbaijan, will discuss Azerbaijan–U.S. Relations in a Kennedy Center Area Focus Lecture at 2 p.m. in 238 Herald R. Clark Building. Admission is free.

Thursday, Feb. 9

The Women’s Research Institute will show “The Nazi Officer’s Wife” at noon in 4186 Joseph F. Smith Building. Admission is free.

Bill McGlynn, diplomat-in-residence at Arizona State University, will conduct an FSO preparation workshop in the Wilkinson Student Center. The written exam info session will begin at 11 a.m. in 3215 WSC. There will be a meet and greet from 12:30-3 p.m. at Table 14 at the west end of the WSC Terrace. The oral exam info session will be from 6-9 p.m. in 3233 WSC. Admission is free.

Sara S. McLanahan, a professor from Princeton University, will speak at 7 p.m. on “Fragile Families: Myths and Realities” during the second annual Marjorie Pay Hinckley Lecture in the Joseph Smith Building auditorium. Admission is free.

Edward Muir, a professor of history at Northwestern University, will speak on "Culture Wars of the Late Renaissance" for a Kennedy Center Global Awareness Lecture at noon in 238 Herald R. Clark Building. Admission is free.

Ramaswami Mahalingam, an assistant professor of psychology at the University of Michigan, will present "Cultural Preference for Sons and Female Neglect in India: Policy Implications" for a Kennedy Center Area Focus Lecture at 3 p.m. in 238 Herald R. Clark Building. Admission is free.

Tickets to BYU’s popular Passover Seder Services are now be available for purchase at 271 Joseph Smith Building. Tickets are $25 for the public and $17 for BYU students, faculty and staff. L. Tom Perry Special Collections at BYU's Harold B. Lee Library will continue the exhibition, “Remembering Joseph Smith, Jr., 1805-2005,” in the O.C. Tanner Gallery until Jan. 13. The exhibit celebrates the 200th anniversary of the birth of the Prophet Joseph Smith. Admission is free. The exhibit is located on the first level of the library and is available weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The BYU Earth Science Museum is displaying "Torvosaurus Tanneri," a large, carnivorous dinosaur. The museum also features two fully mounted skeletons of a camptosaurus and an allosaurus, a mural of the Utah-Colorado region in the Jurassic period, a 150-million-year-old dinosaur egg and a preparation lab window showing museum personnel preparing fossils. Visitors may touch real fossils at the fossil touch table and see a unique diceratops skull. Admission is free. The Earth Science Museum is located at 1683 North Canyon Road in Provo. The museum is open Mondays through Fridays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturdays from noon to 4 p.m. For more information, call (801) 422-3680.

Through the generosity of Fred and Sue Morris of Salt Lake City, the world's most complete collection of waterfowl and pheasants is being exhibited as part of the Monte L. Bean Life Science Museum's permanent collection. The Don Cox Wildlife Collection is on display in the third floor exhibit gallery. The current exhibit “Bears of the World” features bears from all over the world including polar bears, brown bears, black bears and sloth bears. Other exhibits on display include a butterfly exhibit and a shell exhibit, "Ecosystem Dioramas," "Africa: A Diverse Continent" and "Synoptic Collections of Vertebrate Animals.” Gallery shows for the public featuring reptiles are conducted Mondays at 6:30 and 7:30 p.m. and Saturdays at 1:30 p.m. The museum, located southeast of the Marriott Center, is open Mondays through Fridays from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. For more information, please call (801) 422-5051.

The BYU Museum of Peoples and Cultures, located at 700 North 100 E. in Provo, has a new exhibit titled "Rise Up from Fragments: Life and Arts of the Western Anasazi." The exhibit features artifacts made and used by the Western Anasazi, a branch of ancestral Pueblo people who lived near Kanab, Utah. It will be on display until April 2006. Another new exhibition titled “Seeking the Divine: Ritual, Prayer and Celebration” explores rituals and ceremonies that empower people to seek the divine through more than 150 artifacts from countries around the world. It will be on display through April 2007. The museum offers tours and teaching kit programs as well. The teaching kits are provided as supplementary resources for teaching anthropology in Utah. The museum also offers volunteer opportunities. Museum hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays. For more information, call (801) 422-0020.

The BYU Astronomical Society will present public shows each Friday night at the Eyring Science Center. The cost is $2 per person and the event is open to the public. For more information, visit planetarium.byu.edu.
