Vocal Point returns to NBC’s a cappella music competition Monday

BYU’s male a cappella group Vocal Point returned to NBC’s “The Sing-Off” in strong fashion on Monday.

Once again, they earned a standing ovation from the studio audience and, this time, from the judges, too. They were the first group promoted to the next round of the competition.

Vocal Point sang Justin Bieber's "Never Say Never" first, prompting judge Ben Folds to say, "I will never say never will I enjoy a Bieber song sung by a bunch of Mormons."

Later in the the program they performed "The Way You Look Tonight," which really stirred the crowd and judges

A short video feature about Vocal Point that aired prior to their performance captured some private moments as they pulled together to continue the competition for their missing member Ben Murphy, who was home in Australia after the death of his father.

The competing groups perform songs chosen by the producers and have just a week to create an arrangement and perfect it. That includes everything from choreography and costuming to rehearsals and more rehearsals. Despite the demanding schedule, show producers have respected the group’s request to take Sundays off and didn’t schedule any rehearsals or events for them on that day.

“The staff at ‘The Sing-Off’ has been very accepting of our values and desire to uphold them,” said Vocal Point’s McKay Crockett, noting that some staffers became close with the group and explained that they shared their ambition to be successful in show business while maintaining a “clean Christian lifestyle.”

The season's first episode included an introductory feature showing Vocal Point members on BYU campus and singing in front of the Salt Lake Temple.

Two members of Noteworthy, a group comprised of BYU students, are also competing this season. They are part of a group called Delilah assembled from previous contestants, and they also advanced after their second episode.

Vocal Point and Delilah will next appear in two weeks, on Monday, Oct. 17.
