Victorian illustration topic for BYU Lee Library lecture Sept. 19

The Harold B. Lee Library at Brigham Young University will host its first House of Learning Lecture of fall semester, “Words Fail Us: Image and Text in the Victorian Book,” given by Jamie Horrocks, assistance professor in the BYU English Department.

The lecture will take place on Thursday, Sept. 19, at 2 p.m. in the library auditorium on level one. Admission is free and the public is invited.

Horrocks will discuss the popularity and descriptive procedures of Victorian illustration with examples from the era. Victorian illustration changed the reading experience — image became a crucial part of the literary experience in illustrated books for the Victorian era.

The lecture is in conjunction with the library’s Victorian Illustration exhibit. Visitors to the Special Collections exhibit space on level one will be able to view original illustrations by Sir John Tenniel, famous for illustrating Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland; original printing plates from Charles Dickens' novels; and art by Aubrey Beardsley, who illustrated the works of Oscar Wilde.
