Val Anderson to address BYU devotional June 21

Val Anderson, chair of the Department of Plant and Wildlife Sciences, will give the weekly Brigham Young University devotional Tuesday, June 21, at 11:05 a.m. in the de Jong Concert Hall.

Anderson’s address is titled “Into the Burn: A Test of Discipleship and Faith.”

The devotional will be broadcast live on the BYU Broadcasting channels and online at byub.org. Rebroadcast and archive information will be available at byub.org/devotionals or speeches.byu.edu.

Anderson was appointed as department chair in 2006. He joined the BYU faculty after finishing graduate school in 1988.

He has received many teaching and professional awards, including Undergraduate Teacher of the Year from the National Range Science Education Council, National Fellow Award from the Society for Range Management, the John A. Widtsoe Fellowship from BYU and Centennial Partnership Award from the Uinta National Forest.

Anderson’s research investigates rangeland restoration methods and materials, plant responses to environmental stress and rangeland management. He is published in many academic journals, including the Native Plants Journal, Western North American Naturalist, Invasive Plant Science and Management and Rangeland Ecology and Management.

A native of Ephraim, Utah, and a Snow College alumnus, Anderson received his doctorate in range science from Texas A&M University and his master’s and bachelor’s degrees in range science from Utah State University.

BYU study finds the real reasons why some people choose not to use artificial intelligence

In a recent study, BYU professors Jacob Steffen and Taylor Wells explored why some people are still reluctant to use GenAI tools. While some people might worry about an AI apocalypse, Steffen and Wells found that most non-users are more concerned with issues like trusting the results, missing the human touch or feeling unsure if GenAI is ethical to use.
