UDOT posts I-15 construction update for Education Week patrons

The Utah Department of Transportation's I-15 Corridor Project has announced the following construction updates that may affect individuals traveling to Brigham Young University Aug.16-20 for the annual Campus Education Week:

• Provo Center Street Northbound Ramp Closures, Aug 14-16: From 9 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 14, until 5:30 a.m. Monday, Aug. 16, the following ramps will be closed: the off-ramp from northbound I-15 to east Center Street, the off-ramp from northbound I-15 to west Center Street and the on-ramp from west Center Street to northbound I-15

These ramp closures will allow crews to shift traffic to the newly constructed temporary on- and off-ramps. The on-ramp from east Center Street to northbound I-15 will remain open, and Center Street under I-15 will not be affected.

The new ramps will route northbound traffic to a signalized intersection on Provo Center Street between the viaduct and I-15. Click here to see a drawing of the new traffic configuration at Provo Center Street.

The new on- and off-ramps for I-15 northbound will help keep traffic flowing through the interchange while crews rebuild I-15 and the interchange. Motorists should be prepared for significant changes in traffic flow in this area, expect a new traffic signal and proceed with caution.

Bridge Work in North Provo: Through mid-August, flaggers will be posted under I-15 at 820 North in Provo and at 2000 North in Provo (2000 South in Orem) to control traffic while crews install the bridge decks. Motorists should expect one-way traffic or intermittent closures at these locations and possible delays of up to 15 minutes. These short-term delays or closures are in place for motorist safety while work occurs overhead. Please pay attention and follow flagger instructions, and use alternate routes when possible.

• 600 South/920 South Bridge and Wall Work: Construction of temporary bridges over 600 South and 920 South in Provo and of retaining walls along I-15 is underway. Crews are working from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. six days a week. Pedestrian access is limited near and under the bridges for safety as work proceeds. Pedestrians and motorists should also expect one-way traffic or temporary closures at these locations. Flaggers will be posted to direct traffic. Area residents should expect vibration and additional construction noise.

BYU professor Matt Seeley created the Strong Youth Project after watching all five of his children participate in youth sports. While he loves the many invaluable benefits of youth sports, he laments that his children often miss family activities for practice or face pressures to compete in sports during the offseason. These concerns have fueled his collaboration with professors from disciplines across BYU’s campus to improve organized sport experiences for youth, parents and coaches.
