Tuba performers welcome at BYU Tuba Christmas Concert Dec. 5

Brigham Young University’s School of Music will present the 29th annual Utah Tuba Christmas Concert Saturday, Dec. 5, at noon in the Madsen Recital Hall. The event is free to the public.

Performance in the ensemble is open to musicians of all ages who play instruments that are members of the tuba family (tuba, Sousaphone, euphonium, baritone horn, helicon, serpent and ophicleide). There is a registration fee of $5 and a mandatory rehearsal Dec. 5 from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. in E-250 Harris Fine Arts Center. Registration for the ensemble will take place that morning from 9 to 9:30 a.m.

Tuba Christmas is organized and directed by Steve Call, a BYU tuba and euphonium professor. Call organized the first Utah Tuba Christmas Concert in 1980.

“It’s great to see a concert specifically for musicians that are relegated to the back row of the band or orchestra,” Call said. “Now they’ll have the opportunity to shine in the front. People seem to always be surprised that the music produced by these large brass instruments is not loud or harsh, but rich, warm and engulfing.”

The concert will feature a tuba-euphonium ensemble of more than 40 musicians, the BYU Tuba-Euphonium Ensemble and the BYU Jazz Legacy Dixieland Band.

For more information on the rehearsal and to obtain music to practice, visit tubachristmas.com or contact Steve Call at (801) 422-6116 or stevecall@byu.edu.
