Student internships with Scottish, European Parliaments available

Brigham Young University's Center for the Study of Europe is providing internships with members of the Scottish Parliament and the European Parliament during spring term and fall semester this year.

Students interested in applying for the internship may access the online portion of the application at kennedy.byu.edu/isp/internscotland.html. Speakers of European languages are highly encouraged to apply. Applications are due in the SPI box at the International Study Programs office (280 Herald R. Clark Building) by Feb. 1 for spring term and March 1 for fall semester.

Interns receive academic credit while they work as researchers and personal assistants to representatives in the Scottish Parliament or the European Parliament. Assignments range from preparing legislation to researching information for debates. Experiencing firsthand how government agencies work, students attend party conventions and committee meetings.

Those selected will be paired with a parliamentarian who focuses on issues that match the student's interests. Previous interns worked on such projects as family history and speech writing.

The program costs approximately $3,200-4,200 for spring and $4,400-5,000 for fall, which includes tuition, airfare, housing and meals. Scottish Parliament interns live in Edinburgh, Scotland, and European Parliament interns live in Brussels, Belgium.

For information, please contact the student facilitator, Cindy Otis, qtgr192@hotmail.com. Additional information on European internship opportunities may be found on the CSE web site at europe.byu.edu or in the CSE office (216 HRCB).

In a recent study, BYU professors Jacob Steffen and Taylor Wells explored why some people are still reluctant to use GenAI tools. While some people might worry about an AI apocalypse, Steffen and Wells found that most non-users are more concerned with issues like trusting the results, missing the human touch or feeling unsure if GenAI is ethical to use.
