Student construction management team takes top honors at national competition

Brigham Young University’s Ira A. Fulton College of Engineering and Technology’s Construction Management team took first place in the National Home Builders competition.

The competition began in October 2008 when a team of six BYU students received initial plans and documents for a large-scale development in San Antonio, Texas. They were given three months to put together plans detailing everything from finance to marketing to operations.

The BYU students put more than 1,000 hours into the project, including a trip to San Antonio to survey the site. Their work allowed them to identify problems students from other schools in the competition missed, as well as problems and opportunities Centex Homes, the sponsor of the competition, had overlooked.

The students presented their findings and proposal to a panel of judges at a conference in Las Vegas and were recognized as having the best proposal and presentation of the 39 teams from universities across the nation.

“It’s quite an honor to place in a national competition — it says a lot about the work ethic of the students,” said Brian Capt, BYU faculty adviser of the Construction Management team. “The work these students have done will actually be used by Centex Homes in their construction project.”

Students on the Construction Management team include Jonathan Hastings, Russ VanWagenen, Cody Allen, Cody Andreasen, Joseph Layne and Chris Leavitt
