Special Collections' "Remembering World War II" exhibit on display at Lee Library

House of Learning Lecture on Sept. 14 will inaugurate exhibit

The L. Tom Perry Special Collections at Brigham Young University will officially open a special exhibition, “Remembering World War II: Pearl Harbor and Beyond,” commemorating the 65th anniversary of Pearl Harbor and the U.S. involvement in the war, on Tuesday, Sept. 12, on the first level of the Harold B. Lee Library.

To help inaugurate the exhibition, the library will host a House of Learning Lecture on Thursday, Sept. 14, at 2 p.m. in the Lee Library auditorium by Robert Freeman, a member of the BYU Church history faculty and director of the Saints at War oral history project. His lecture is titled, “A Legacy of Service: Latter-day Saints in World War II.” It will be followed by a question-and-answer session.

Admission is free, and the public is welcome.

The exhibition features a wide range of documents including letters and pictures as well as artifacts from the war that give insights into the American experience in the war, according to Freeman. The exhibit will be on display through December 2006.

Included in the exhibit are:

  • The Medal of Honor awarded to Capt. Mervyn Bennion, captain of the battleship USS West Virginia that sank during the attack on Pearl Harbor

  • A serviceman’s Book of Mormon used by President Boyd K. Packer, now president of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints

  • Sacrament trays with spent shell casings for cups used by soldiers in battle

  • A U.S. flag created near the end of the war by Clarence Bramley, a survivor of the Bataan Death March. Exhibition hours are 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday, except on university holidays.
