Songwriters to gather during Media Music Week March 23-27 at BYU

Faith-Centered Music Association Workshop on Saturday

Media Music Week at Brigham Young University March 23-27 will be held in various locations on campus and will include the following events:

  • Friday, March 23 — The Songwriters’ Showcase will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall in the Harris Fine Arts Center. Admission is free.

This event will showcase student-produced work from genres including piano ballads, acoustic work, rock and country.

  • Saturday, March 24 — BYU will host the Faith-Centered Music Association Songwriters’ Workshop from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Maeser Auditorium on the southwest end of campus. It is sponsored by the organization that presents the annual Pearl Awards. Registration for this event begins at 8:30. Admission requires a $15 FCMA membership that can be purchased at registration.

Open mic performances will be held from 2 to 3 p.m., and the "Refiners’ Fire" (a chance for brave songwriters to have their demo recordings publicly critiqued by professionals) will be held from roughly 3 to 5 p.m. Registration for these two events is available by e-mail at mediamusic@byu.edu.The keynote speaker will be Clive Romney, founding director of Enoch Train and a successful independent producer. Other highlights will include a presentation by Jerry Jackman, the largest publisher of choral music in the LDS community; an appearance by the Young Ambassadors and LDS singer-songwriter Sam Payne; and a presentation by BYU alumnus Robert Reynolds, the attorney responsible for signing The Killers. Reynolds will also be giving a master class at 4 p.m. in E-400 Harris Fine Arts Center on Friday, March 23.

  • Tuesday, March 27 — The Invitational Songwriters’ Showcase will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall in the Harris Fine Arts Center. Admission is free.

BYU professor Rob Sowby teaches and studies environmental engineering, urban water infrastructure and sustainability. He has particular expertise in the planning, design, construction and operation of public water systems. That expertise has been increasingly important (and regularly sought out) in the wake of apocalyptic wildfires that have taxed those public water systems.
