School of Music hosts Young Artist of Voice Competition in January

Brigham Young University’s best singers will compete for the “Singer of the Year” title in the School of Music’s Young Artists of Voice Competition Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, Jan. 24, 26 and 28, at various locations on the BYU campus.

The first round of the competition will begin on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. in the Nelke Theatre. The second round will be Thursday at 5 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall, and the concluding performance and competition will begin on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. in B092 Joseph F. Smith Building.

All events are free and the public is welcome to attend.

The top 30 vocal students wil compete in the first and second rounds. The final nine or ten students will compete in the final round for the title of “Singer of the Year” as well as a cash award.

The Young Artists of Voice competitors focus on classical compositions from operas and the art song repertoire.

“This competition gives our students an opportunity to perform in a competitive atmosphere,” said Lawrence Vincent, BYU School of Music voice faculty member. “It also gives the university community an opportunity to hear the top singers in the School of Music.”

Green-thumb dynasty: BYU landscaping wins fifth national championship in six years

For the fifth time in six years, BYU students dug, pruned and planted their way to the National Collegiate Landscaping Competition title, the March Madness of college landscaping teams. BYU bested 50 other universities in the four-day event, outscoring the second-place finisher by more than 358 points and breaking the 5000-point total for the first time in the 48-year history of the tournament.
