Representative Matheson to speak at BYU Nov. 6

Rep. Jim Matheson (D-Utah) from the U.S. House of Representatives will speak at Brigham Young University at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 6, in the Wilkinson Student Center Varsity Theater.

BYU faculty and students are invited to attend. Each session is an hour long and will include time for questions.

The visit is sponsored by the College Democrats, the Political Science Department and the College of Family, Home and Social Sciences.

Darren Hawkins, chair of the BYU Political Science Department, said the address will be beneficial to faculty and students who want to learn about varying perspectives on important national issues directly from policymakers themselves.

“Too often political debate in the media degenerates into shouting matches,” Hawkins said. “Meetings like this one are perfect opportunities to engage in civil discourse and be reminded of the value of our political system.”

Matheson was sworn in for a seventh term as the representative for Utah’s Fourth Congressional District in January 2013. He serves on the House Energy and Commerce Committee, which deals with energy policy, consumer protection, food and drug safety, health care, air quality, environmental health, telecommunications, and interstate and foreign commerce.

In a recent study, BYU professors Jacob Steffen and Taylor Wells explored why some people are still reluctant to use GenAI tools. While some people might worry about an AI apocalypse, Steffen and Wells found that most non-users are more concerned with issues like trusting the results, missing the human touch or feeling unsure if GenAI is ethical to use.
