"Religion in 21st Century Warfare" topic of Jan. 18 Kennedy Center lecture

The David M. Kennedy Center at Brigham Young University will host Father Mark Lowell Sargent in a Global Awareness Lecture Wednesday, Jan. 18, at noon in 238 Herald R. Clark Building.

Sargent will discuss “The Role of Religion in 21st Century Warfare.”

Admission is free and the public is welcome.

Sargent is the former ecumenical director of his Catholic diocese and is currently responsible for relations between the Catholic and Muslim communities in southwestern Ontario.

An expert on Islam, Sargent works with an American-Canadian team employed by the U.S. Army to prepare deploying troops for duty in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Having joined the Canadian Armed Forces reserve at an early age, Sargent began his career as a private soldier and was eventually promoted to major. He has the distinction of having served in all three branches of the Canadian forces. His operational tours include the Arctic, Norway, Somalia, the Former Republic of Yugoslavia and South Africa.

Sargent received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Western Ontario, and was ordained to the priesthood in May 1987.

BYU’s space ace: Minor planet named in honor of Jani Radebaugh

BYU planetary geology professor Jani Radebaugh’s contributions to planetary science have reached cosmic proportions as she recently received the prestigious honor of having a minor planet named her. The asteroid, previously known as “45690,” now bears the name “45690janiradebaugh” on official NASA/JPL websites.
