Red Star Red Army Chorus and Dance Ensemble of Russia invades BYU stage March 8

The colorful Red Star Red Army Chorus and Dance Ensemble of Russia will be featured in a Brigham Young University Performing Arts Series concert Thursday, March 8, at 7:30 p.m. in the de Jong Concert Hall.

Tickets are $25 with $3 off for BYU Alumni and seniors and $7 off for students with student ID. Tickets are available at the Fine Arts Ticket Office, (801) 422-4322 or at byuarts.com/tickets.

The Red Star Red Army Chorus and Dance Ensemble will be performing several traditional Russian pieces, such as the Ukrainian folk song “Stable the Horses.” The song describes a group of soldiers returning after a ride, celebrating their homecoming and building a new life.

Created by the USSR Strategic Missile Forces in January 1977, initially the Red Star Red Army Chorus and Dance Ensemble performed concerts primarily for troops of the Missile Forces.

“This company has been our treasure and pride for many years,” said General-lieutenant Sergey Karakaev, commander-in-chief of the Strategic Rocket Forces of the Russian Federation. “We are very pleased to have them represent our country at this artistic level 20 years after their impressive American debut in 1992.”

The ensemble is under the direction of conductor Nikolai N. Rabovsky, who grew up showing great interest in piano and singing and was ultimately accepted into the Choral School in Moscow. He later studied at the Gnesin Conservatory and then served in the Soviet Army until becoming the assistant conductor of the Red Star Red Army Chorus and Dance Ensemble.
