Proposals sought for 2009 Sperry Symposium on the Scriptures at BYU

Should demonstrate how Old Testament teaches of Christ

Brigham Young University Religious Education is seeking proposals for the 38th annual Sydney B. Sperry Symposium to be held on campus in October 2009.

“We invite proposals that demonstrate a scholarly exploration of ways in which the Old Testament teaches of Jesus Christ and His gospel,” said Patty Smith of Religious Education. “Only papers fully grounded in the Old Testament will be considered. The proposed research is expected to make an original contribution to our understanding of the Old Testament.”

The one-page proposals should be written in essay form with four paragraphs detailing the following elements:

1. The central question the research aims to answer.

2. A preliminary thesis.

3. A brief bibliography.

4. A brief statement of the writer’s experience or training.

Please include the following in the heading of the proposal: name, occupation, address, phone number, e-mail address and a working title. Proposals must be submitted electronically as an attached Word, WordPerfect or PDF document to patty_smith@byu.edu by April 28, 2008.

Submitters will be notified of their proposal’s status by June 2, 2008, after which, final drafts ranging from 15-25 pages will be due Oct. 6, 2008.

For additional information, contact Patty Smith, (801) 422-3611 or D. Kelly Ogden, (801) 422-3978.
