President of Southern Baptist Theological Seminary to speak at BYU Oct. 21

The third lecture in the Faith, Family and Society series at Brigham Young University will be given by R. Albert Mohler, Jr., president of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Monday, Oct. 21, at noon in the Wilkinson Student Center Varsity Theater.

His lecture is titled “A Clear and Present Danger: Religious Liberty, Marriage and Family in the Late Modern Age.” Admission is free and the public is welcome. Overflow seating will be available in rooms 3220 and 3380 of the Wilkinson Student Center.  

Since 1993, Mohler has served as president of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, the flagship school of the Southern Baptist Convention and one of the largest seminaries in the world. He has been recognized by many influential publications as Time, the Wall Street Journal, USA Today, the Washington Post and Christianity Today as a leader among American evangelicals.

Mohler also hosts two programs: “The Briefing,” a daily podcast analysis of news and events from a Christian worldview, and “Thinking in Public,” a series of conversations with the day’s leading thinkers. He writes a popular blog, www.albertmohler.com, and a regular commentary on moral, cultural and theological issues.

A native of Lakeland, Fla., he received a bachelor’s degree from Samford University and a master’s degree and a doctorate in systematic and historical theology from Southern Seminary. He has pursued additional study at the St. Meinrad School of Theology, and has done research at the University of Oxford. 

The Faith, Family and Society lecture series is co-sponsored by Religious Education, the Richard L. Evans Chair of Religious Understanding and the International Vice President’s Office at BYU.

Green-thumb dynasty: BYU landscaping wins fifth national championship in six years

For the fifth time in six years, BYU students dug, pruned and planted their way to the National Collegiate Landscaping Competition title, the March Madness of college landscaping teams. BYU bested 50 other universities in the four-day event, outscoring the second-place finisher by more than 358 points and breaking the 5000-point total for the first time in the 48-year history of the tournament.
