"Pioneer Games" subject of exhibit, activity night at BYU museum Oct. 18

The Harold B. Lee Library at Brigham Young University is hosting the Education in Zion gallery’s first fall semester activity night, “Pioneer Games,” Friday, Oct. 18, from 7-9 p.m. at the base of the spiral stairs in the Joseph F. Smith Building.

Students are invited to bring their friends, roommates and dates to the gallery for a night of fun games and social activities. The evening will begin with a scavenger hunt in the gallery, followed by several traditional games, prize drawings and refreshments. Admission is free.

The Education in Zion gallery currently exhibits replicas of 19th-century games that Mormon pioneer children would have played in Nauvoo, on emigrant ships from Europe to America and even during the pioneer era of Utah history.

The games at the activity night will include checkers/draughts, jumbo jacks, hardwood throwing tops, paddle balls, bean bag double cans, pick-up sticks and dominos. Each game contains a wealth of information on the history and background of how children would have played these in the 19th century. Society today still has vestiges of these games, but in newer, updated forms.
