Pianist Alan Chow to present guest recital, master class at BYU Jan. 29

Award-winning pianist Alan Chow, coordinator of the piano program at Northwestern University, will perform a concert at Brigham Young University on Tuesday, Jan. 29, at 7:30 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall.

Chow will also hold a master class on Monday, Jan. 28, at 5 p.m. in the Madsen Recital Hall. Admission to both the master class and the concert will be free.

The first half of Chow’s performance will include Franz Joseph Haydn’s Sonata in E flat major, No. 52 and Franz Liszt’s “Vallée d'Obermann” from Years of Pilgrimage: Swiss. The second half of the concert will be entirely devoted to works by Frédéric Chopin, including “Barcarolle,” the Nocturne in C sharp minor, Op. Posthumous and the Sonata No. 2 in B flat minor.

Chow has earned many awards for his talent, including the first prize at the Concert Artists Guild Competition, the grand prize at the Palm Beach International Piano Competition and both the silver medal and audience favorite prize at the Gina Bachauer International Piano Competition.

He has performed as a soloist with Hong Kong Philharmonic, National Symphony, Utah Symphony, Oakland Symphony, Tulsa Philharmonic and Kansas City Symphony Orchestras. He also served as artist-in-residence at the University of Arkansas. He studied at Indiana University, the Juilliard School, and the University of Maryland.
