OSU's Brad Bushman to deliver Majorie Pay Hinckley Lecture Feb. 13

Brigham Young University will host Brad Bushman of The Ohio State University as he gives the 10th annual Marjorie Pay Hinckley Lecture Thursday, Feb. 13, at 7:30 p.m. in the Gordon B. Hinckley Alumni and Visitors Center Assembly Hall.

Admission is free, and public is welcome to attend.

Bushman will discuss “Is Violent Media ‘Just Entertainment?’” He is professor of communication and psychology at OSU and a professor of communication science at the VU University in Amsterdam during the summer.

Through research focusing on the causes, consequences and solutions to the problem of human aggression and violence, Bushman has challenged several myths including the idea that violent media has only a trivial effect on aggression. He has more than 130 publications in peer-reviewed journals, including top scientific journals such as Science and Nature.

Bushman’s research has also been featured on prominent radio and television stations, including ABC News 20/20, CBS, BBC, NBC and NPR, as well as in popular magazines and newspapers including, Scientific American, Newsweek, Time, Sports Illustrated, New York Times, Wall Street Journal and USA Today. He is also a frequent blogger for Psychology Today.

The Marjorie Pay Hinckley Endowed Chair in Social Work and the Social Sciences honors Sister Hinckley's commitment to strengthening home and family. The chair focuses on women's development, strategies to help in difficult parenting situations and strategies to help children in difficult circumstances. The Marjorie Pay Hinckley Lecture is delivered each year by a prominent social sciences scholar.
