New version of AIM student information system available

The Office of Information Technology announced Tuesday the deployment of a new release of the Web-based student information system, Academic Information Management or AIM, for use by faculty, staff and students.

"AIM ultimately touches everyone in the campus community, including faculty, academic departments, alumni and the more than 30,000-member student body," said Gary Kramer, associate dean of Student Academic and Advisement Services. "To ensure that the campus community is well represented, BYU has worked with people from all areas on campus, including user groups and engineers to design the new system."

Accessed through Route Y, AIM is a user-friendly connection to online academic information. AIM can be used anytime and anywhere there is access to the Internet.

This new version of AIM will replace a large portion of the existing university student information system. The new system allows for the consolidation of a number of services while at the same time providing enhanced transaction processing, reliability, data warehousing, content management and security functionality--all of which will improve the overall effectiveness of the student information system.

"The old Ingres-based system functioned well for many years at the university," said Dave Terran of the Office of Information Technology. "But to provide a flexible environment that can be easily re-engineered with more features and functionality over a long period of time, the university needed to move to a Web-based framework supported by the Oracle enterprise-level database, a move that was not possible on the old system."

This sophisticated new system is divided into three main groups:

--Students

o GPA computation

o Registration and schedules

o Integration of graduate and undergraduate progress reports

o Student transcripts, records and entrance exams

o Course tracking

o Personalized final exam schedules

--Faculty

o Academic planning and evaluation

o Class rolls

o Picture class rolls

o Electronic grade submission

o Instructor's course schedule

--Administration

o Transfer evaluation

o Class scheduling and planning

o Student advisement

o Up-to-date online reporting

As the new AIM is deployed, users may have questions or concerns about how to use this new system. Questions may be answered by calling ext. 2-3AIM or ext. 8-3AIM or by emailing aimhelp@byu.edu.
