Museum of Peoples and Cultures opens new exhibit with street fair May 14

"Seeking the Divine: Ritual, Prayer and Celebration"

Brigham Young University's Museum of Peoples and Cultures will inaugurate a new exhibition Saturday, May 14, during a free street fair from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the museum, 700 North 100 East in Provo.

The title of the exhibition is "Seeking the Divine: Ritual, Prayer and Celebration." The exhibition will open in conjunction with the statewide celebration of Utah Prehistory and Heritage Week.

Visitors can learn how to make cordage, arrowheads and other traditional native crafts during the street fair.

The native dance group Morning Star, along with BYU multicultural clubs, will perform. In addition to with these performances and activities, tours of the exhibit will be offered.

"This exhibition explores rituals and ceremonies that empower people to seek the divine, especially during crucial life events such as birth, coming-of-age, marriage and death," said Marti Allen, director of the museum.

"Seeking the Divine," like all of the museum's exhibitions, is curated by BYU students enrolled in the Certificate in Museum Practices Program offered through the museum. It will display more than 150 artifacts from countries around the world.

The Museum of Peoples and Cultures is open weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
