Mormon attitudes, Civil War subject of March 1 Lee Library lecture

The Harold B. Lee Library at Brigham Young University is hosting a House of Learning Lecture, “‘My Heart is Filled with Pain’: The American Civil War and Changing Mormon Attitudes,” Friday, March 1, at 2 p.m. in the library auditorium on the first level.

The lecture is in conjunction with the library’s Civil War exhibit and will be presented by Richard Bennett, a professor in the BYU Church History Department. Admission is free.

Bennett is a native of Sudbury, Ontario, Canada and previously served as the head of Special Collections at the University of Manitoba before joining BYU Religious Education as an associate dean. Bennett is also an associate editor for the Journal of Book of Mormon Studies and specializes in 19th-century Mormon history.

It has been nearly 150 years since the Civil War ended, but Americans still recognize those four years as a turning point in the nation’s history. The library’s Civil War exhibit explores a nation torn, a people devastated and a cause worth fighting for.

During the exhibit's run, visitors on the first level can look at letters, photographs and other artifacts from the Civil War, as well as hear speeches and watch videos dedicated to the era.
