Michael O. Tunnell named chair of BYU Teacher Education Department

Dean Mary Anne Prater of the David O. McKay School of Education at Brigham Young University has announced the appointment of a new chair.

Michael O. Tunnell has accepted the position of chair in the Department of Teacher Education beginning fall semester 2013. He replaces Nancy Wentworth, who was recently named director of the Center for Teaching and Learning.

Tunnell received his bachelor’s degree from the University of Utah in 1973.  He earned a master of education degree in 1978 from Utah State University and a doctorate in educational studies in 1986 from BYU. Before coming to BYU, he taught at Arkansas State University and Northern Illinois University.

Tunnell has taught children's literature at BYU in the Department of Teacher Education for 21 years. He has published several professional books and has written articles for a variety of educational and literary journals.

He has served on the Newbery Award Committee and on the selection committee
for the NCTE Award for Excellence in Poetry for Children. His own output of children's books include novels, picture books and non-fiction books.

BYU appoints Michael Hansen as chief strategic communications and messaging officer

Hansen has a long career in strategic planning, marketing and branding. Before serving as a mission president for the Church of Jesus Christ for the France Paris Mission from 2020 to 2023, he had been with Nike, Inc., for 20 years. From 2008 to 2020, he was the senior director of Global Sports Marketing.
