Matthew Shumway to present BYU devotional Jan. 20

Matthew Shumway, a Brigham Young University geography professor, will present a campus devotional, “Our Journey Through Mortality,” Tuesday, Jan. 20, at 11:05 a.m. in the Marriott Center.

The devotional will be presented live on BYU Television, KBYU-TV, KBYU-FM and byubroadcasting.org. Visit byub.org/devotionals or speeches.byu.edu for rebroadcast and archive information.

Shumway joined the BYU faculty in 1991 and has served for the past nine years as department chair. He teaches courses in population, economic geography and research methods. His research interests include causes and effects of internal migration, as well as demographic and economic restructuring of rural areas.

He received a bachelor’s degree in international relations and a master’s degree in geography from BYU, and a doctoral degree in geography from Indiana University.

BYU study finds the real reasons why some people choose not to use artificial intelligence

In a recent study, BYU professors Jacob Steffen and Taylor Wells explored why some people are still reluctant to use GenAI tools. While some people might worry about an AI apocalypse, Steffen and Wells found that most non-users are more concerned with issues like trusting the results, missing the human touch or feeling unsure if GenAI is ethical to use.
