Marimba virtuoso to perform at BYU March 1

Acclaimed marimba player Leigh Howard Stevens will perform in concert on Tuesday, March 1, at 7:30 p.m. in Brigham Young University's Madsen Recital Hall.

Tickets are $9 with $2 off with a BYU or student ID. For tickets, call the Fine Arts Ticket Office at (801) 378-4322 or visit performances.byu.edu.

Hailed by Time Magazine as "the world's greatest classical marimbist," Stevens' repertoire ranges from the preludes and fugues of Bach to original marimba works written expressly for him.

Stevens will begin the performance with a piece he wrote, "Great Wall."

"Perhaps the only valid reasons for choosing the name are that the piece sounds vaguely Asian, I have tried to suggest the great mass and expanse of the wall and both eventually fade into invisibility," he said.

He will also perform pieces by J.S. Bach, Debussy, Tschaikovsky and Gordon Stout.

Stevens has helped revolutionize the marimba and has brought it to many countries including The People's Republic of China.

In addition to performing marimba throughout the world, Stevens serves as a consultant and conducts educational master classes for Malletech Instruments.

He also served as professor of marimba at the Royal Academy of Music in London from 1997-2004.
