Margaret Young to tell "Untold Stories of Black Mormons" at BYU Feb. 8

Brigham Young University will host Margaret Blair Young, one of the authors of “Nobody Knows: The Untold Story of Black Mormons,” in a lecture Wednesday, Feb. 8, at noon in the Education in Zion auditorium (B-192 JFSB).

Young’s address is titled “Faith, Hope, Charity and Telling Our Stories: How We Unite in Our Communal Journey.” The event is sponsored by the College of Humanities, the Department of English, BYU Studies and Multicultural Student Services as part of BYU's observance of Black History Month.

Her lecture will cover the stories of Green Flake, who was born a slave and came west with the Mormon pioneers; Jane Manning James, who knew Joseph Smith and settled in the Salt Lake Valley with her family; and Darius Gray, who lived through the heat of the Civil Rights Movement as a Mormon.

Young is an English professor at BYU and has been involved in a larger effort to tell the stories of black members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
