"Making Peace: The West and Islam" topic of Wheatley Institution lecture Feb. 8

Abdul Aziz Said, the Mohammed Said Farsi Professor of Islamic Peace at American University, will present “Making Peace: The West and Islam” at a Brigham Young University Wheatley Institution lecture Tuesday, Feb. 8, at 7 p.m. in the Gordon B. Hinckley Alumni and Visitors Center.

Said is the senior ranking professor of international relations and the first occupant of the Chair of Islamic Peace at American University. He also founded the university-wide Center for Global Peace and the International Peace and directed the Conflict Resolution Division in the School of International Service.

He served as advisor to the Democratic Principles Working Group of the U.S. Department of State’s Future of Iraq Project, and he is a consultant to members of the Iraqi Governing Council.

Said has published more than 17 books, articles in regional and international newspapers in the Arab world and editorials to the Washington Post, where he was featured in the Washington Post Magazine in 2003.

The Wheatley Institution was founded in 2007 to enhance the academic climate and scholarly reputation of BYU and to enrich faculty and student experiences by contributing recognized scholarship that lifts society by preserving and strengthening its core institutions.

Green-thumb dynasty: BYU landscaping wins fifth national championship in six years

For the fifth time in six years, BYU students dug, pruned and planted their way to the National Collegiate Landscaping Competition title, the March Madness of college landscaping teams. BYU bested 50 other universities in the four-day event, outscoring the second-place finisher by more than 358 points and breaking the 5000-point total for the first time in the 48-year history of the tournament.
