Lynn Callister named fellow of American Academy of Nursing

Lynn C. Callister, an associate professor in the College of Nursing at Brigham Young University, was recently selected as a fellow of The American Academy of Nursing.

"This is the highest honor awarded to a professional nurse," said Elaine Marshall, dean of the College of Nursing. "Lynn is a tireless contributor to nursing, and it is wonderful to see her recognized in this way."

Callister is one of 82 new inductees to receive the award for 2003 and the only nurse from Utah. She will be formally inducted into the Academy during its 30th annual conference Nov. 15 in San Diego, Calif.

The honor recognizes Callister's contribution to nursing in uncovering knowledge about cultural aspects of childbirth, promoting culturally competent nursing care and improving healthcare for women and newborns globally.

"Dr. Callister is one of the few pre-eminent scholars in the field of cross-cultural experiences in childbearing," said Margaret Freda of the Albert Einstein School of Medicine. "Few other nurses in the world have achieved her depth of knowledge in this field."

Callister was also recently named a Fulbright Scholar and will work at the St. Petersburg State Medical Academy in Russia teaching in maternal/newborn nursing, women's health and nursing education. She will also be conducting an outcome evaluation of the St. Petersburg Women's Wellness Center in conjunction with the American International Health Alliance.
