Lee Library hosts House of Learning lectures in November

The Harold B. Lee Library at Brigham Young University will host two House of Learning lectures during November.

A professor of psychology at BYU will discuss the perceptions and treatments of depression Thursday, Nov. 13, at 2 p.m. in the Lee Library auditorium.

Diane Spangler, associate professor of psychology, will address "What Causes Recovery From Depression: Changing Chemicals or Cognition?"

On Tuesday, Nov. 18, at 2 p.m. in the library auditorium, S. Kent Brown, professor of ancient scripture at BYU, will discuss Arabia during the era of Lehi and Sariah and their trek.

Brown, the director of Ancient Studies at BYU, will show film clips from his visit to Yemen in 2001, where he and a team from BYU filmed parts of the famous "Incense Trail" that passes through Yemen.

The lectures are open to students, staff and members of the community.

Spangler has taught at BYU since 1997. She was a research fellow at the Stanford University School of Medicine in the Department of Psychiatry and completed a clinical internship at the University of California, San Francisco Medical School in the Department of Psychiatry. She earned her doctorate degree from the University of Oregon.

Brown has conducted much research in Yemen and Oman and is the author of a major study titled "New Light From Arabia on Lehi's Trail," which was published by the Foundation of Ancient Research and Mormon Studies.

He earned his doctorate degree in religious studies from Brown University in 1972 with an emphasis in New Testament and early Christian studies.

The House of Learning lecture series sponsors several speakers throughout the academic year at BYU. The series seeks to provide a forum where professors, students and staff can openly discuss a wide range of ideas.
