Lecture, exhibit to celebrate 150 years of "Leaves of Grass" at BYU

Ed Folson, a professor at the University of Iowa, will present a lecture titled “Re-Thinking the First Edition of Walt Whitman’s ‘Leaves of Grass’” Thursday, Oct. 27, at 11 a.m. in B092 Joseph Fielding Smith Building at Brigham Young University.

A distinguished Whitman scholar, Folson has presented at conferences in the United States and Europe to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the publication of “Leaves of Grass.”

This lecture, sponsored by the College of Humanities and the English Department, is open to the public.

As a campus celebration of the anniversary, Ed Cutler and Jesse Crisler of the BYU English Department have mounted a special exhibit in the L. Tom Perry Special Collections on the first floor of the Harold B. Lee Library.

Drawn from BYU's extensive Whitman collection, the exhibit features a rare first edition of “Leaves of Grass” along with all subsequent editions, an original manuscript poem, a letter by Whitman and original paintings by the American painter Maynard Dixon, who completed illustrations for an edition of “Leaves of Grass” that was never published.

The exhibit is free and will run through Oct. 31. For more information about the Whitman exhibit or lecture, please contact Ed Cutler at (801) 422-4292.
