"Latin America and the Left" topic for BYU Global Awareness lecture April 5

The David M. Kennedy Center for International Studies at Brigham Young University will host Elizabeth A. Whitaker, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Canada, Mexico and Public Diplomacy, for a Global Awareness Lecture Wednesday, April 5, at noon in 238 Herald R. Clark Building.

Whitaker will discuss “Latin America and the Left: U.S. Policy toward Bolivia, Chile, Cuba and Venezuela.”

Admission is free and the public is welcome.

The former director of public diplomacy and public affairs for the Bureau of Western Hemisphere Affairs, Whitaker has also served as an officer with the U.S. Information Agency in Central America, Portugal and Washington, D.C. Since the consolidation of USIA into the Department of State in 1999, she has served as a senior-level career development officer and is a graduate of the senior seminar.

Whitaker has received numerous Superior and Meritorious Honor Awards, and holds the Senior Foreign Service rank of Minister Counselor.

Thanks to a group of BYU students and their professor, this year marks a new era for the Food & Care Coalition’s fresh produce supply. Professor Matt Arrington and students recently designed and built a hydroponics greenhouse to provide nutritious produce during the cold months.
